24 Hours at The Purist Villas, Ubud

There is no alarm clock in your villa. There are birds. And the Tawar River.

Eighteen villas on the banks of the Tawar River, a mile and a half on foot from the centre of Ubud, and a single day that moves at exactly the pace you choose. This is what a full day at The Purist Villas actually looks like.

5:50 AM — Before the Rest of the World

The first sound arrives before the light does: one bird, then several, then the low, constant note of the Tawar River underneath it all. Ubud's green light seeps through the shutters. You step onto the terrace; the air is thick with petrichor and frangipani. Across the river, Kutuh Kaja is only just waking up.

You go back to sleep. It is, without question, the right decision.

8:00 AM — Breakfast Is a Philosophy

There is no buffet. The butler noted your preferences the night before, in conversation rather than on a form. Breakfast arrives on your terrace above the river: watermelon juice, granola with Balinese honey and fruit, mango, mangosteen, rambutan, and something hot, nasi goreng, or eggs with herbs cut from the garden that morning.

The right information, at the right moment, without being asked.

10:00 AM — Ubud Before the Crowds

The shuttle drops you in the centre before the day-trip buses arrive. The itinerary is told in human terms rather than a checklist: the mango juice seller who will wait for you, the gold-leaf gilder still at work on a temple carving. A mask-carving workshop run by a craftsman with forty years behind him. A walk down Jalan Dewi Sita. A warung, and a glass of turmeric juice.

1:00 PM — The Pool and the Art of Doing Nothing

Midday heat settles over the property. Your sun lounger is already in the shade, at the exact angle you mentioned in passing. The pool is cool, a white heron works the bank of the Tawar, and the water carries a faint scent of lemongrass.

These are the things that make you book again.

4:00 PM — The Ayurvedic Spa

The spa follows an Ayurvedic philosophy, with therapists trained in yoga and meditation as much as in massage. The oils are from Sensatia, a Balinese botanical brand. There is no music dictating how you should feel, only quiet, and hands that know exactly where the day has settled in your shoulders.

6:30 PM — The Hour Before Dinner

A stone shower open to the garden. A drink on the terrace. The sky over Kutuh Kaja shifts from green to gold to amber in the space of twenty minutes. In the distance, the real sound of gamelan drifts over from a ceremony somewhere in the village.

8:00 PM — Dinner at Balisimo

Dinner is beside the pool, built from whatever the market delivered that morning: a vegetable and lemongrass broth, whole grilled fish wrapped in banana leaf with sambal matah and black rice, coconut and jaggery for dessert. The wine list is short and considered rather than long and impressive.

10:30 PM — The Villa

The bed has been turned down, a single plumeria flower left on the pillow, and a small card beside it with tomorrow's weather and the market's opening hours. Small things, noticed and handled before you thought to ask.
